Oktoberfest, Germany’s world‑famous beer festival, is a vibrant celebration of Bavarian culture held each year in Munich from late September into the first weekend of October. What began as a royal wedding party in 1810 has grown into the largest folk festival on the planet, attracting millions of visitors who come to enjoy traditional music, hearty Bavarian food, and of course, the iconic Oktoberfest beer brewed specially for the event. The festival takes place on the Theresienwiese, a vast open space named after Princess Therese of Bavaria, whose marriage to Crown Prince Ludwig inspired the very first celebration.
Oktoberfest is defined by its lively atmosphere, where enormous beer tents, each run by a historic Munich brewery, offer a unique blend of tradition and entertainment. Inside these tents, visitors enjoy Märzen‑style Oktoberfest beer, known for its rich, malty flavour, served in the famous one‑litre Maß steins. Traditional Bavarian dishes such as pretzels, roast chicken, sausages, and pork knuckles fill the menus, while brass bands play folk tunes that encourage dancing, singing, and joyful camaraderie. Outside the tents, the festival grounds feature colourful parades, fairground rides, folk performances, and markets that showcase Bavarian craftsmanship.
The festival’s traditions remain central to its identity. The opening ceremony begins with the mayor of Munich tapping the first keg and declaring “O’zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!”), signalling the official start of festivities. Visitors often dress in traditional attire—Lederhosen for men and Dirndls for women, adding to the cultural richness and authenticity of the event. Families enjoy daytime activities, while evenings bring a more energetic atmosphere as music, dancing, and celebration fill the tents.
Oktoberfest has become a global symbol of German heritage, inspiring countless smaller festivals around the world. Yet the Munich celebration remains unmatched in scale and tradition. It is more than a beer festival; it is a cultural gathering that honours Bavarian history, hospitality, and community spirit. For many, attending Oktoberfest is a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience that blends history, food, music, and celebration into an unforgettable event.
