Frontier Guards Day, also known as Border Guard Day, is an official professional holiday in the Republic of Armenia, observed annually on 26^th April. The day recognizes the service and sacrifice of Armenia’s border guards, who play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s frontiers and maintaining territorial integrity. Armenia has marked this date since 2006–2007, when the holiday was formally established to acknowledge the importance of border protection in the country’s security framework.

Why 26^th April?

The date was chosen to commemorate a key milestone in Armenia’s modern border‑security history. On 26^th April 1994, the draft of the National Border Act was presented, laying the foundation for the legal and structural framework of Armenia’s border guard service. The Act later became law in 2001, solidifying the institutional role of border troops within the state’s security apparatus.

The Role of Armenia’s Frontier Guards

Armenia’s Border Guard is a branch of the National Security Service (NSS). Established in 1992, it is responsible for monitoring and protecting Armenia’s borders with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and Iran. Over the years, the service has evolved significantly, especially as Armenia has worked to strengthen its sovereignty and increase national control over border checkpoints.

In recent years, Armenia has expanded the presence and capabilities of its border guards. Armenia, however, chose its own date to reflect its unique national history and legislative milestones.
