Saint Anthony of Padua, one of the most beloved saints in the world, is celebrated for his powerful preaching, deep compassion for the poor, and his reputation as a miracle‑worker. His feast day is 13th June, and he holds a special place in the hearts of Catholics in Portugal, Italy, and Brazil, where he is the primary patron saint.
Early Life and Calling
Born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195, Saint Anthony grew up in a wealthy family but chose a life of religious devotion. He first joined the Augustinian Canons, studying theology in Coimbra. In 1220, moved by the martyrdom of Franciscan friars in Morocco, he joined the Franciscans and took the name Anthony.
A Brilliant Preacher and Teacher
Anthony’s extraordinary gift for preaching was discovered almost by accident when he was asked to speak at an ordination. His sermons combined deep scriptural knowledge with clarity and warmth, captivating both scholars and ordinary people.
- He taught theology in Padua and Bologna at the request of St. Francis of Assisi.
- His preaching in Italy and France earned him the title “Doctor of the Church” centuries later, in 1946.
Miracles and Popular Devotion
Saint Anthony is widely known as the finder of lost items, a devotion rooted in stories of his intercession helping people recover lost objects or even lost faith. He is also invoked for:
- the poor and the sick
- travellers
- those seeking marriage or a spouse
- the oppressed and the hungry
- lost people and lost souls
His popularity spread rapidly, and he was canonised less than a year after his death in 1231, one of the fastest canonisations in Church history.
Saint Anthony and Brazil
Saint Anthony is the primary patron saint of Brazil, where devotion to him is widespread. His feast day on 13th June is celebrated with Masses, processions, and traditional rituals. Many Brazilians also associate him with marriage and matchmaking, which is why Brazil’s Lovers’ Day (Dia dos Namorados) is celebrated on 12th June, the eve of his feast.
Brazil is home to major shrines dedicated to him, including the Basilica of St. Anthony in Santos, a Neo‑Gothic landmark that draws thousands of pilgrims each year.
Legacy
Saint Anthony’s legacy endures through:
- his writings, especially the Sermons for Sundays
- countless stories of answered prayers
- global devotion across cultures
- artistic depictions of him holding the Infant Jesus, a lily, or a book
He remains a symbol of compassion, wisdom, and hope , a saint whose life continues to inspire millions.
